Product Care
Caring for Your Salt x Steel Piece
Each piece is crafted from stainless steel, aluminium, brass or Australian hardwood — materials chosen for their durability and character. Proper care preserves both.
Stainless Steel
Highly resistant to corrosion, though not immune to it — particularly in humid or coastal environments. Wipe down regularly with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. For marks or fingerprints, use a mild soap and warm water, then dry the surface thoroughly; residual moisture is the primary cause of surface rust. Avoid bleach, chlorine and abrasive cleaners. In humid climates, an occasional application of a stainless-steel-specific polish provides an additional protective layer.
Aluminium
Lightweight and highly rust-resistant, though prone to light surface oxidation over time, particularly outdoors or near the coast. Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then rinse and dry completely. Avoid steel wool or abrasive materials, which mark the surface and accelerate oxidation. For pieces kept outdoors or coastal, a light coat of car wax or an aluminium-specific sealant every six to twelve months is recommended.
Brass
Develops a natural patina with age — a feature of the material rather than a defect. To preserve the original finish, clean with a brass polish and soft cloth, working with the grain. Unlacquered brass will patina more readily and may be treated as part of the piece's evolving character; lacquered brass should be cleaned only with non-abrasive products, as harsh polishes can compromise the coating.
Australian Hardwood Frames
Our timber frames are made from locally sourced Australian hardwood — a natural material whose grain and tone will vary from piece to piece and mellow gently with age. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth, working in the direction of the grain. For marks, use a cloth lightly dampened with water (or a drop of mild soap), then wipe dry immediately — never let water sit on the timber. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, silicone sprays and abrasive pads, which can strip or cloud the finish.
- Keep frames out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade or darken the timber unevenly.
- Avoid placing near heaters, air-conditioning vents or areas of high humidity, as changes in moisture can cause timber to swell, shrink or crack. In bathrooms, ensure the room is well ventilated.
- Every 6–12 months, a light application of a quality furniture oil or beeswax-based polish will help nourish the timber and maintain its finish.
Mirror Glass
Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth and a gentle glass cleaner. Spray the cleaner onto the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror, so liquid doesn't run into the frame or the edges of the mirror backing.
Finishes
- Polished / mirror finish — shows fingerprints and light marks most readily; clean frequently and dry thoroughly.
- Brushed / satin finish — more forgiving of surface marks; clean in the direction of the brushing.
- Powder-coated / painted finish — clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which may chip or dull the coating.
- Raw / unlacquered metal — will age and patina naturally with exposure; this is expected and not considered a fault.
General Guidance
- Dry all surfaces thoroughly after cleaning; residual moisture is the leading cause of corrosion in metal and damage in timber.
- Minimise prolonged exposure to salt air where possible, and bring outdoor pieces under cover during severe weather.
- Use coasters or protective pads beneath items placed on polished surfaces.
